A few seminars and multiple social media workshops later, you decide its time to build your brand anew, and this time you're going to put social media to work. It sounds really exciting but the best part is - all you have to do is get an email account, make a social networking profile, get one of the junior staff members to write some blog posts and you're ready to take on the social media sandstorm!

A few important - no strike that out - a few VERY important guidelines to keep in mind before you dive into the story sea of social media:

  • Know what you plan to achieve - Be very specific in terms of the objective with which you intend to undertake social media optimization. What do you want your social media strategy to accomplish for you? Do you want greater brand visibility? Do you wish to create a buzz about your product? Do you simply want a web presence and nothing more? You must decide upon these factors before orchestrating a strategy so that you do not plan for something you don't intend to accomplish at the cost of something that is imperative to your brand
  • You are nothing without a Strategy - Social media optimization requires careful and concentrated strategizing in order to work. It is not something to be thrown together in a rush. Social media optimization requires detailed denouement and planning that takes into account your target audience, the ways in which you wish to interact with them and which tools you plan to implement and how.
  • Accentuate your strengths - Think about the qualities that make your brand phenomenal. What are the ways in which your brand is different and superior to thousands of others available to your consumers? Argue it out - why would somebody choose your brand over others.

These are just a few of the things that you must keep in mind before launching a social media campaign for your brand. Social media can provide a significant web presence for your brand and give it recognition and recall value in the minds of consumers but the strategy you employ must not be put together in haste. In order to run a successful social media campaign, you must carry out a conversation with your consumers by offering meaningful information about your brand and asking them to participate by talking to you about their expectations, their experiences, and requirements.
